Illustrative Math
Our math curriculum at Middle School 61 is designed to foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through the Illustrative Math program. This engaging curriculum emphasizes problem-solving and real-world applications, enabling students to develop critical thinking skills. To further enhance their learning experience, we incorporate additional resources from iReady and IXL, which provide personalized practice and targeted support tailored to each student's needs. Together, these tools create a comprehensive math program that motivates students to excel and builds a strong foundation for their future mathematical endeavors.
Science
Amplify Science is a science curriculum that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers. It is designed to spark our elementary students’ interest and empower them to ask more questions, think more critically, and generate innovative ideas.
HMH Into Literature
The HMH Into Literature curriculum for Middle School 61 offers a dynamic and engaging approach to literacy for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. In 6th grade, students immerse themselves in a variety of texts and themes, fostering a love for reading while utilizing Lightsail, an interactive platform that enhances comprehension through personalized learning paths. As students progress to 7th and 8th grades, they dive deeper into their literary studies, incorporating NEWSELA, which provides access to high-quality articles and resources tailored to their interests and reading levels. Alongside these digital tools, novel studies enrich their learning experience, allowing them to explore key literary concepts and develop critical thinking skills. Together, these components create a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for success in their academic journey and beyond.
Social Studies
The New York City K-8 Scope and Sequence is a comprehensive resource that integrates national standards, the New York State Social Studies Core Curriculum (content, concepts, key ideas, understandings and performance indicators) and the NYS K-8 Social Studies Framework. Each yearly course of study is organized around a suggested time frame for core content guided by essential questions.
Technology
At M.S. 061, the technology club helps with technology repairs around the school and acts as a place for students to practice and perfect their technology skills. In class students use Minecraft for education and Scratch which allows for block coding.
VISUAL Arts
In Visual Arts class students learn about warm and cool colors and create art such as watercolor paintings. They learn that artists can use certain colors to create emotions in art. Students are actively engaged in the art making process by using a variety of art materials while creating personal touches in their art.
