Dearest Families,

Welcome to a new year at Middle School 61!  Ms. J. Mercedes and Ms. S. Lewin are the Site Supervisors for the New York Edge After-School Program.

The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among under-served students by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, character and attitudes for success in life.

The underlying structure of this model is the building of the social-emotional skills in our students through a leadership initiative focused on youth engagement. Social-emotional learning is integrated in all activities (sports, arts, STEAM, academic enrichment, Middle School Today, High School Tomorrow, College Access programs) for 7th graders as well as service learning activities.

To emphasize the importance of each student’s interest, New York Edge provides “voice and choice” opportunities for students to select from a menu of activities during each of the three seasons (fall, winter, spring) of the program year. This holistic approach supports the development of the whole child as each student works toward becoming a valued community member. A critical component of our middle school model is our weekend and holiday experiences that enhance the week-long programs. We provide professional development to staff members in all areas of service with a focus on age/grade appropriate activities. The staff to child ratio never exceeds 1 to 15 and is lower whenever possible providing an optimal environment for growth.

About New York Edge’s Champions Clubs:

The Champions Club, New York Edge’s flagship program, supports thousands of youth in over one hundred school sites throughout the five boroughs and Mt. Vernon. All New York Edge Champions Clubs offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including instruction in core academic subjects, as well as STEAM (an integrated approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), Visual & Performing Arts, and Sports & Wellness.  A focus on leadership supports social-emotional learning (SEL), designed to close the opportunity gap for our students. Understanding the different developmental needs of youth provides each Champions Clubs with the opportunity to be a positive change-maker for the school community. Champions Clubs are specifically designed to support students at each level of their education Elementary, Middle or High School.
